Carolina Panthers vs Houston Texans (Matchup Report) Date/Time: September 29, 1 p.m. TV Coverage: FOX. Opening Odds: Houston -4 O/U 46 (Line History) Opening Odds Analysis. The line opened with Houston -4 at 22bet, as the Texans have looked strong so far this season and are playing at home. Bettors are believing more in Deshaun Watson.

The 1-2 Carolina Panthers travel to Texas for a meeting with the 2-1 Houston Texans at NRG Stadium. Panthers’ quarterback, Cam Newton, will once again take the week off to focus on himself and body. His head hasn’t looked in the game and Cam is dealing with a foot injury. The foot is worse than originally thought.

He admitted that the extent of how his foot felt was shielded from the team. Instead of letting the team that he’s in pain, Newton hid it from the team and he opened the season playing injured. Now with that cleared up, he’s taking time off to heal. Mentally he has to get straight as well. His head must get back into football mode to be effective.

In his last appearance, Newton looked out of it while the Buccaneers beat the Panthers by a score of 20-14. Newton better look out because if Kyle Allen continues to play well, the Panthers are not going to hand the starting job back to Newton. It may sound a bit crazy, but if momentum is on their side and the offense is zinging, benching Allen for Cam would be even crazier.

Allen is coming off a monster performance against the Arizona Cardinals. He passed for 4 touchdowns and 261 yards with no interceptions. Not bad for a guy who appeared in only two games as a rookie in 2018. This is first opportunity to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, though. His first audition was great and had people talking. Allen will be looking for a repeat performance against the Texans in Houston on Sunday afternoon.

Odds

The Texans are coming off a nice road win on the west coast against the Chargers. They went into Los Angeles and won straight up as underdogs for their second win of the year. Houston lost the season opener against the Saints, but have responded for wins over the Jaguars and Chargers. They cannot take Kyle Allen and the Panthers lightly Sunday. Panthers vs. Texans Pick:

Panthers

The public and media are predictably excited about Kyle Allen after what he did against the Cardinals. He diced them up and led the Panthers to a 38-20 win. While the Texans can’t take Allen lightly and ignore his ability, he’s getting hyped up a little too much for my liking. The Cardinals do not have a great defense. They don’t even have a good defense.

Odds

In fact, a lot of people were talking about the Cardinals as the worst defense in the NFL going into this season. Going into Week 4, the Cards are 30th in the NFL with 443.3 yards allowed per game. They’ve also allowed nearly 30 points a game. With that in mind, let’s not crown Kyle Allen as a franchise quarterback for the Panthers just yet.

Bengals Vs Panthers Odds

Allen and the Panthers will face a Texan defense who’ve allowed 20.7 points per game. They aren’t excellent by any means, but this will be a bigger challenge than the Cardinals. As the season progresses, we are going to see a lot of quarterbacks torch the Cardinals’ defense, so I’m not putting a lot of stock in his performance last week.

Texans Vs Panthers History

Deshaun Watson was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance over the Chargers. Watson notched a 3-touchdown performance with 351 passing yards. The acquisition of Kenny Stills was a sneaky good move and is going to prove to be a difference-maker in Houston. Stills finally goes to a team and quarterback who are competent. Look for Watson and Stills to link up often in this one.

Texans Vs Panthers Odds Predictions

Expect the Panthers’ defense to give Watson and the Texans’ offense issues at times, but I think they’re going to wear the Panthers out in this one. Allen likely isn’t going to be able to match scores with Watson in the 4th quarter. Look for the Texans to pull away late, as Allen shows that moving the ball on the Cardinals and Texans isn’t the same. In any case, his hype is keeping the point spread respectable. As a result, that gives us some value on the Texans to cover 4 points.
